You have a leak in your home and you suspect further roof damage. You’ve set up an appointment with a roofing professional, but in the meantime what can you do?  Here are some tips on what you can do immediately before the professional get there.

 If you have areas of visible leaks, grab yourself a bucket to contain the leaking water. Clean up any existing damage using either a vacuum or dehumidifier.

Examine your attic or crawlspace to pinpoint the source of the leak. This excess water will usually go to the nearest joint then find a place to escape from there.
 The location of the leak is not always where the damage is and instead can be the weakest area in your ceiling or drywall.
 This can still be helpful to minimize further damage, so place a bucket across the joists to catch water and debris.

It’s not advisable that you get onto your roof to examine the damage, especially after heavy rain. Leave that to your roofer.
 Damage to your shingles, leaks around flashing, any kind of pooling of water, and debris are some of the things your professional roofer will examine.

Assess damage from the ground level. Clear away any debris on and around your home and get rid of standing water, that can leak into your home’s
 foundation ruining flooring and personal property. Work quickly so excess water doesn’t have a chance to create mold and mildew.
